Elmsdale Lumber Company Ltd. (ELCO) is a family owned firm that incorporated in 1950 and employs 55 workers. Inspired by a nearby Volvo plant, the company focuses on quality over quantity. Using up to eight varieties of wood species, ELCO manufactures small amounts of high-quality lumber. The company's final products are so accurate that one customer volunteered to absorb a price increase in exchange for additional lumber.

Finnish aid helps build Zimbabwe's largest sawmill
Article Abstract:
Foreign aid from Finland helped establish a new Z$93 million sawmill in Zimbabwe in 1993. The Nyanga Timbers Sawmill produces pine lumber at a rate of 50,000 cubic meters per year, which has boosted Zimbabwe's lumber production capacity by 20%. The opening of the mill has also resulted in the employment of 1000 people. Descriptions of the manufacturing machinery used on the sawmill's production line are included.

Chilean forestry project gets government's 2nd OK
Article Abstract:
Savia International is launching the Rio Condor forestry project under which it will manage the forests of Tierra del Fuego, Chile, and manufacture hardwood products for international markets. New milling facilities will produce 150,000 cubic meters of value-added wood products annually. The Rio Condor project is giving a new approach to forest development from an economic perspective.
